LivingSocial Gets a Makeover! 225

Here at LivingSocial we're all about keeping things fresh and appealing, which is why we're proud to introduce you to the newly-redesigned LivingSocial! We appreciate your patience as we roll it out and welcome any comments you have at feedback@livingsocial.com.

We've been hard at work on a design that makes it easier to interact with your collection and see recommendations both from our community and your friends. Read on to learn more about all of the improvements we've made to the LivingSocial experience.

The first thing you'll notice is our new look. Gone are the days of the dark LivingSocial bar running across the top of your screen. In its place you'll find a nice bright green header, with a sleek silver navigation bar beneath it that lets you view your profile, collection, recommendations, leaderboards, settings, and our newest exciting feature: trends! The trends feature enables you to see what's most popular on LivingSocial by week, month, or all time. It also shows the the biggest movers, so you'll never be out of the loop on what's hot!

The next feature change you'll notice is the way you add items to your collection. When you visit an item page, you'll notice a beautiful blue button that says "Add to my collection." When you click it, you'll see a drop down that let's you add it to your collection as easy as 1-2-3!

Speaking of numbers, you're also going to notice that all item images on LivingSocial now have a number at the lower right hand corner. These numbers are there to show you what percentage of people like that item.

The last major enhancement we've added will improve the quality of recommendations we give you by basing them on the type of things you like in your collection. You can find our recommendations in three places: 1) click on the "recommendations" tab in the navigation bar at the top of the page; 2) scroll to the "Try Something New!" section at the bottom of the homepage; 3) you'll notice that sometimes we'll surface recommendations directly to you when you're on an item page. We hope you'll find our recommendations relevant and useful!

We know change is hard, but we think in this case it's definitely for the better and hope that you'll agree! We appreciate your patience as we roll the site out this week and work through any issues. We also want to know your thoughts and encourage you to share them with us at feedback@livingsocial.com. Until next time, keep LivingSocial!

-----

An update:

We know that there are some bugs in the current site, and our development team is working to fix them as quickly as possible. A few things that will be back in the next couple days (some of them broke during the push yesterday, others are still being re-worked):

  • Scrolling carousels on profile pages only
  • More interaction with your friends (friends list, what your friends are doing, etc)
  • Commenting/Discussions
  • Updated profile tab in Facebook
  • User medals on profile pages

...as well as several new features. Again, we appreciate your patience as we perform this massive upgrade. This new design is enabling us to bring more relevant content to you and will enable us to expand to include several of the most requested features from users.

Each iteration of changes makes your apps less and less appealing. In the latest version for books, the link for a review does not work. The link for own, borrow, etc does not work. I'm not impressed and I think it may be time to bail.
  2. Leigh MannSeptember 03, 2009 @ 06:35 PM
It's fine overall but I really want to be able to see ALL of the books I'm currently reading, not just the last three I entered. I actually use this to remind me what books I'm currently reading I have been working at the longest. When I click on "see all" it brings me to the "My Book Collection" page, which in it's current format I NEVER use. Please change the currently reading settings so we can see them all at a glance. Thank you.
  3. EdSeptember 03, 2009 @ 06:39 PM
Pick Five isn't working on Facebook.
  4. SophieSeptember 03, 2009 @ 06:46 PM
it LOOKS pretty, but none of the options actually work on it. i can't update my book lists, i can't edit whether i own any of the books and I can't see my whole collection... how is this easier to interact with?
  5. FeSeptember 03, 2009 @ 06:52 PM
I love living social but many frend´s don´t like this because they don´t understand on english ¿Can you put this livingsocial book in Spanish? I prefer last page and don´t like the news changes. thank
  6. KatrinaSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:12 PM
I HATE IT! Change it back! It sucks!
  7. RickSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:21 PM
Nothing works. Sure looks pretty though. Too bad I cannot use the damn thing.
  8. RickSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:26 PM
Seriously, this does not work. I cannot rate anything, I cannot review anything, I cannot even say I own anything. As a top 10 reviewer of music on this, I have to say that I am thinking it is time to leave.
  9. LeoSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:42 PM
It looks ugly, and while the additional functionality is good, it has lost the elegance that the previous version of Visual Bookshelf had.
  10. JohnSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:44 PM
It certainly looks more Web 2.0, but I'm not sure why anyone would think that an improvement. And adding whitespace and bigger fonts doesn't make things more readable, it just means a lot more scrolling on information-dense pages (though I guess it's still better than removing any of that information, though I see that happened too in one or two places). Not an improvement, even if everything worked.
  11. AuraSeptember 03, 2009 @ 07:48 PM
I do not like the new profile look. It was easier to see what others wanted, read or were reading with the old profile. It looks a lot like the old iRead app. I really dislike it; even if it's colorful, it lost its functionality. Please give us the option of keeping the old version!
  12. LisaSeptember 03, 2009 @ 08:30 PM
I can not see my friends who follow my books. Unless they have added something to their collection or rated something recently, I can not find access to my friends shelves. Am I missing it.... If it is not there it needs to be put back. That is one of myt favorite features
  13. kierstenSeptember 03, 2009 @ 08:34 PM
i really dislike the new look - it looks bulky and unwieldy, especially the fonts. the borders are annoying, and it feels like a lot of the page is wasted on empty white space. i hate that i can't see all the books i'm currently reading - i liked being able to scroll through the covers. the "beautiful blue button" is ugly. and what do the little percentages mean on the book covers? the colors are nice, the subheading font at the top is kind of cool, but as far as functionality and the general look? i don't find it an improvement. sorry for censuring all your hard work, but please give us the option of using the old format.
  14. KrysSeptember 03, 2009 @ 08:36 PM
Not about it. The old design had a much easier interface, particularly in the books function, which is the only reason I use it. I'm unimpressed.
  15. kathrynSeptember 03, 2009 @ 08:48 PM
I understand the desire to change things... to try and improve them, but this sucks. Before i could see everything i needed at a glance, and now its so spread out, and some of my favorite features are missing. I would like all of the books i am reading at one time to be displayed, not just the top three. I would like to have my friends list where i can see it an access it easily (where is it by the way?) and not least frustrating of all.... why remove the comments area? That was my favorite part. Hope you can fix it soon
  16. heatherSeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:10 PM
this is pretty bad. can't do anything with my books. can't find anything. time to switch to another bookshelf.
  17. John KerrySeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:12 PM
Not sure I like these changes. If go to your lists you can't seem to get past the first 15 lists you have. Tried everything I could think of an no luck. As well when trying to add a movie to a list on the "My Collection" page it is hard to find the exact spot to click to bring down the menu.
  18. WhitneySeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:28 PM
I miss having the arrow to scroll through the books like a rolodex. I do not like it in list form. The arrow was much more appeasing.
  19. KeithSeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:37 PM
I find it harder to use and the fancy buttons are not helpful. The old design worked just fine.
  20. GloriaSeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:50 PM
The new design is not "appealing."
  21. EmilySeptember 03, 2009 @ 09:56 PM
I absolutely hate the new layout. Please bring the old one back.
  22. Deniz MartinezSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:11 PM
Where did my friends list and comment board go?? And my 1000k ribbon that I spent hours and hours inputting albums to get? NOT cool...
  23. FranceSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:16 PM
I truly dislike the new look - bring back the old one, please.
  24. Adam LSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:20 PM
    Thanks for the feedback everyone!
  25. MichelleSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:32 PM
I'm sorry, but I'm with the majority on this. :( I don't find the overall look of the new Visual Bookshelf appealing. There's too much white space, and I miss the simple design of the previous version. Also, like a lot of other people have mentioned, I really really miss being able to see all the books I've read/want to read/reading right now and I miss being able to scroll through them with the arrow. It really made things a lot easier and looked much nicer too.
  26. Keith DSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:46 PM
Hi everyone, Thanks for all of the feedback, please keep it coming! In the launch of the redesigned site, we did lose the "friends" module but it will be returning very soon. You'll find that your friends will be integrated throughout the site, making it very easy to see what they're up to and explore their collections. For performance reasons, the carousels on our profile pages were removed in favor of using the My Collection page to view items within a collection. With the overwhelming amount of feedback about these being removed, we understand that you want a more visual way of browsing collections. Within the next few days, we will be adding a way to view the images and titles of all of the items in your collection as well as your friends'. We use LivingSocial too and we want the experience to be as easy and as much fun to use as you do and we'll continue listening to your feedback and adding enhancements to the site. Much more is in store for us over the coming months in way of new features so please stay tuned!
  27. Peter E. StrandSeptember 03, 2009 @ 10:49 PM
I liked it MUCH better before. If I had started using Bookshelf with this, I would have quickly decided against it. I read the blog. I don't care for these are "improvements," not even the look. Go back to what you had before, please.
  28. ChasSeptember 03, 2009 @ 11:08 PM
Not a big fan. I liked how you could scroll through the books before. Now the 'visual' aspect is almost microscopic.
  29. kathrynSeptember 03, 2009 @ 11:17 PM
What appealed to me most before was that it was a nice and easy way of keeping a collection, i really enjoyed looking through the covers of my books (reading now, read, and want to read), and my friends collections as well. I don't get a bookshelf feeling at all anymore with the new design... it just looks like a myspace page or something like that with all the boxes around everything and the giant white spaces, and that the page is so long. I am glad to hear that you will be tweaking this new design, as it doesn't appeal at all.
  30. TanuSeptember 03, 2009 @ 11:22 PM
I don't like the new look. Two very important things are missing: 1) Can't scroll through books any more. 2) I can't see the list of my friends. I can only see their activities on the main page. I do hope that they fix this. If they don't, I am switching over to Shelfari or something.
  31. DaalaSeptember 03, 2009 @ 11:27 PM
I've added reviews but they aren't showing up on FB - the generic review comes up on my page which makes it look like I'm praising the last book I read when in fact I gave it a bad review! Not impressed.
  32. katSeptember 03, 2009 @ 11:43 PM
I don't like the percentages on the book covers, it ruins the cover art, and i don't choose what i read, or what to think of what i read, based on what other people say. I think the percentages look tacky actually. Hoping this gets fixed soon (just go back to the original, i think we would all be happy with that) or will have to keep my collection somewhere else.
  33. SamSeptember 04, 2009 @ 12:02 AM
Sorry, I don't like the redesign. Visually poor in that it only allows the user to see a small portion of activity. Please bring back the old design. Barring that, I may have to switch to a different application to track my books.
  34. AnaSeptember 04, 2009 @ 12:20 AM
I liked the old version better. I mostly use the "book" feature and it is just not user friendly any more. I originally came to living social because I liked the set up. This new one is just a mess and hard to see the books, can't scroll any more and those numbers in the corner are very distracting. Totally lost the bookshelf feeling. These changes make me very sad because the visual aspect is lost. Not to mention that a lot of the functions are not working.
  35. MelinaSeptember 04, 2009 @ 12:38 AM
i prefer the old version...please change it back!!
  36. JasonSeptember 04, 2009 @ 12:48 AM
I'm not at all pleased with this new format. The old design was simple, clean and efficient, and the new format is none of these things. At the very least could you provide an option to chose between the old and new format?
  37. kimiSeptember 04, 2009 @ 01:10 AM
I don't like the new format and will probably be leaving this application.
  38. SueSeptember 04, 2009 @ 01:22 AM
This is extremely difficult for me to use and quite frankly it doesnt feel like it is even worth using anymore. I like teh old one where i could scroll and see everything. please change it back?
  39. MikeSeptember 04, 2009 @ 01:45 AM
Pick 5 won't publish to Facebook.
  40. NicoleSeptember 04, 2009 @ 01:49 AM
i like it, i just wish the old features were back on it. i cant scroll or see my friends
  41. JimSeptember 04, 2009 @ 02:41 AM
I have to say I prefer the old one. I really can't figure out why all these social sites, including facebook, feel the need to constantly redesign. Users spend time getting used to a layout and to various functions, then all of a sudden its all changed. If people are using the site they like it the way it is, I don't see how massive changes will bring more users and it only stands to alienate current ones. Stick to small changes and fine tuning.
  42. WayneSeptember 04, 2009 @ 02:49 AM
I'm also not a fan of the new format. I prefer scrolling through my book titles.
  43. mariesseySeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:06 AM
YUK!! Why did you change a really good format. I might just bag out of the whole thing.
  44. AliceSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:25 AM
I don't want to see what other people think of a book before I have read it - I preferred the option of whether to scroll through people's reviews, rather than a simplified number that spoils the lovely pictures of the books. The whole point of this is 'visual' bookshelf! It's like having post-its stuck all over your actual books. I don't like the way it looks either, but I suppose it's something I'll eventually get used to - I did with new Facebook, anyway. The fonts are far too large and it needs far too much scrolling to see all the information. How do I get to my friends? The bigger graphics also slow down the loading time for those of us with slower internet speed and browsers, making it much more frustrating and less satisfying.
  45. MariaSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:30 AM
I don't like what you have done! It was SO much better and convenient to use before the changes. Besides, it takes forever for the page to open. And I do not want to see pictures of the books and movies in my collection, I am quite happy to have a compact list that I used to have before, but there seems to be no option to remove pictures. Change it all back, please!!!
  46. SariSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:53 AM
I only started using this application a couple of days ago and today it seems like everything I liked about it has disappeared. What happened to the "Comments" in the version for albums? Did you just delete them? :( And who wants to see the procentages on top of album covers instead of the actual album covers? And why did you delete the scroll left/right; it was nice and easy to browse other people's collections but now... it's not.
  47. PeterSeptember 04, 2009 @ 04:19 AM
I used to love the way I could just mindlessly browse through my entire collection with all the attached artwork. That was my favourite part of this applications. Sad to see that it's been done away with in favour of the more boring/sterile lists.
  48. ErnestSeptember 04, 2009 @ 04:44 AM
You asked for thoughts and feedback, so here is my 2 cents. In general, the new design looks nicer at a glance but it appears to have decreased functionality. I am not sure whether this is because it actually is less functional or whether it is the 'something new, I don't know where everything is' effect. I am currently not in favour of the change, but I acknowledge that this is due to me not being familiar with the new design. Amongst the things I (immediately) dislike include the immediate inability to see which friends have installed the application and what books they are currently reading, have read and want to read, having only 3 book reviews displayed at once (which makes searching unnecessarily time consuming) and the fact that it nows takes at least 3 more clicks to achieve what 1 click used to. Amongst the things I (immediately) like include the trend, which makes for interesting (if for me, superficial) reading, and the automatic 'try something new' on the home page. Overall, the redesign seems to have traded functionality for visual appeal. Judging from the limited comments above, more people preferred the functionality over the new visual appeal (which is generally a subjective decision anyway). I question whether, considering numbers only, the number of dissatisfied users who (effectively) abandon the application will be made up by the number of users who previously didn't use the application but will now be drawn in because of the new design. All the best with the change. You haven't sold it to me, but I'm still willing to be convinced.
  49. PaoloSeptember 04, 2009 @ 04:45 AM
OMG it's awful! why that change? now it is: 1. irreproducible 2. confusing 3. everything is to much 4. it's ugly 5. it doesn't work everything please please change it back!
  50. SarahSeptember 04, 2009 @ 05:00 AM
I'm sorry but I don't like it. I loved the old design of "My Profile" and that you could scroll through the books you're reading/have read/want to read.
  51. SariSeptember 04, 2009 @ 06:13 AM
I don't understand why there is so much WHITE SPACE instead of the full collection, comment column and friend list. How does it improve this application if we scroll through white space instead of collections and other information? I believe most people use(d) this application as a way of organizing their own collections and ideas, and connecting with people with similar tastes. I'm pretty sure they don't use it to get instructions: start reading this book, because it's the most popular thing today, and stop listening to that album, because the majority stopped listening to that. Also, I don't think many people use the "recommendations" feature unless they want to get a good laugh. A computer really has no clue as to what we might like. But you can add as many features of this sort as you like, if they don't replace the features that are actually helpful.
  52. GedSeptember 04, 2009 @ 07:14 AM
Please bring back the scrolling arrows for the collections, it was much easier before (and fun) to search through collections and for me this was one of the most important aspects of living social! Also I don't think having the last three books read is enough. The page certainly looks brighter and I like the percentage idea but I don't think this update of living social is quite as useful as it once was!
  53. DeborahSeptember 04, 2009 @ 07:56 AM
This is much less appealing than the old layout. I'm thinking of changing apps. I used to be able to see all my books and have friends see them at a glance. They don't want to mess around with different pages.
  54. FedericoSeptember 04, 2009 @ 08:23 AM
It's a real pity that the visual bookshelf has been made to look like more of a webpage than a nice, no-nonsense application. The previous application's layout was, in my opinion, as good as it was. The scrolling arrows are gone, it's less convenient to see what your friends are reading, and it looks "dead". Is it at least possible to have a choice for layout?
  55. KariSeptember 04, 2009 @ 08:29 AM
Am in agreement with all the other comments! I miss the scrolling function, comments and the friends list. Also the profile page has too much white space, everything is positioned on the right hand side so that the left is empty, pointless space and you have to scroll down to see anything as everything is stacked one on top of the other. The percentages or the n/a box are also annoying and seem pointless. They ruin the book covers, especially having them on the books on your personal profile page. If I want to see percentages (which I most likely will not as they are meaningless to me) I should be able to click on the book to see them, not have them given to me regardless!
  56. KariSeptember 04, 2009 @ 08:37 AM
Also am missing the book numbers next to Already Read, Want To Read etc. Was an instant way to see the status of my collection. It seem the more I look around the more I notice and am disappointed with :-(
  57. JoSeptember 04, 2009 @ 09:07 AM
I agree with most comments here. I'm sorry but I liked the old VB better. I don't care about "trends", nor do I care about how a book is already rated. The percentage on the book cover makes it look cheap. This app used to be the only way I could easily keep track of the books I've read or want to read but now it's difficult to find what I want. I miss my friends page & I don't like my own profile because I can't see all of my books at once. I hoped the change would have included a 'reread' or 'reading again' option. If it's there, I don't see it.
  58. BFuenzSeptember 04, 2009 @ 09:32 AM
What happened to 'Already Read, Want To Read etc?' That was the way anyone can instantly see what i was reading. I am disappointed with this look.
  59. John KerrySeptember 04, 2009 @ 09:53 AM
Seems like I may have found another problem. I was trying to look at some lists from people (including my own) and it appears you can't get past the first 10 items on the list. Anyone else found this to be the case or is there a solution I can't find. At leat my problem with accessing the rest of my lists (I have more than 15 on movies) has been solved so they are trying to respond to our concerns.
  60. KristinSeptember 04, 2009 @ 09:57 AM
I don't like how spread out everything is. There is just too much white space and it's hard to find what you're looking for. Also, I don't like that the ability to scroll through books on our profile has been replaced with a "See All" link. The organization is terrible.
  61. Adam LSeptember 04, 2009 @ 10:09 AM
Thanks again for the comments! We hear you and are planning next steps to address the biggest issues Adam L LivingSocial
  62. BerThaSeptember 04, 2009 @ 10:14 AM
This is insane I can't see my friend's collection. Not even my own books, the scroll was so much better and this is completely useless. Also pictures and links are totally broken. I agree with most comments, I don't see how this changes make things better. I would like to return to the old look or I don't think i will continue using livingsocial.. Anyway, the old look was better or at least useful for something.
  63. Jen E.September 04, 2009 @ 10:22 AM
Why fix something that wasn't even broken in the first place???!!! Granted, the new format is definitely brighter, but I find it visually cluttered and hard to navigate. I know change can be hard, but COME ON-- I know a change for the worse when I see it. I don't need flashy style to catalog my books. I just need a website that works.
  64. PatrickSeptember 04, 2009 @ 11:04 AM
I love this application, but it's turned to be out so UGLY. That hurts even more when you consider everything worked fine.
  65. JoeSeptember 04, 2009 @ 12:32 PM
Liked the old version MUCH better - more functional, more usable - both of which are MORE important than appearance to me. Please switch back.
  66. Maria PatrinouSeptember 04, 2009 @ 02:41 PM
I only use the book application and I don't like these changes. I can't see what my friends are reading unless they've just posted something. I can't visit their collections or their profiles. It was one of the best features of the old format. Please bring it back.
  67. ChandlerSeptember 04, 2009 @ 02:49 PM
HELLO WHEN ARE WE SWITCHING BACK TO THE OLD LOOK?
  68. PaulSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:11 PM
Why do you limit the number of words a person can write in a review?
  69. S.September 04, 2009 @ 03:23 PM
OMG, this is horrible, a complete and utter downgrade! I really miss those arrow thingies and the numbers next to Reading Now, Want to Read and Already Read. That really gave it the bookshelf look and it was so easy to navigate and that's why I enjoyed using this application. I'm afraid I'll have to delete it if it doesn't get switched back to the old look and choose another similar thing, there should be plenty, but VB was always my favourite. Please please please change it back, I'm sure you can see that everyone hates the new look, it's completely useless. :(
  70. Stephanie C. September 04, 2009 @ 03:24 PM
Where is the board !!?? My friends used to leave me messages there and me to them ! And where are my friends ??? And what about the comments about the feeding !!!??? It's to that beautiful actually, it's too white and the view is reduce to 3 books, it doesn't show a global view of the actual reading of a heavy reader. And I don't care about the "Trends" or the "Try something new" !! But give me the ability to communicate with people back !!! I really don't like the new version.
  71. Rich MorrisSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:25 PM
Please add travel spots/destonations to your lists. I have been to some very strange places in this world and I would like to give advise on "Off The Trail" places to go.
  72. Thomas AylesworthSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:44 PM
Love it! Looks much cleaner and is easier to navigate. Not sure why there are so many people complaining about it. I thought the old look was terrible. This is a major improvement!
  73. MWSeptember 04, 2009 @ 03:55 PM
Another vote against the percentages on the book covers. They are ugly, and useless. I'm not sure which is worse.
  74. VoraSeptember 04, 2009 @ 04:00 PM
I don't see the "social" thing anymore without the possibility to see who has read the same book as me, or without the board and the friends list... This new version seems so dead and empty... And for the visual aspect, the covers of the books are all blurry... And finally, I really don't like the percentage thing and the Trends : It's just like "Whoa ! Everybody is reading this so I have to read it too !" No thank you. Could you just mix together the old version and the new one please ?
  75. KateSeptember 04, 2009 @ 04:22 PM
Looks sleek. I was able to manage my book collection, but I can't add to it. I also noticed the book covers are blurry. Haven't checked out the rest of the makeover, but I'm sure there are other problems. NEEDS FIXING!!
  76. TruittSeptember 04, 2009 @ 05:49 PM
Well, I've tried it all out. Some things I like about the new site, some things not-so-much. I’m going to focus on the not-so-much here. I miss the top-rated list on the profile page. It was a nice way to see what a person really liked, not just what they’re currently reading or recently read. On the album display page, the picture of the album is covering up much of the title and the artist. I also agree that there’s a LOT of unused space on this page, and the reviews are buried very deep on the page. (I do like the new orange bar functionality). The ads are much more obtrusive now, especially on the profile page, but I suppose that was part of your plan. Like many users above, I also miss seeing the friends list, and can’t figure out how to see what they’re up to. What’s the rank # on my profile? If it’s working, it’s pretty cool that I’m #1,000,000 exactly… It’d be nice if you added a spot on the profile page for a user to type something about themselves so visitors can get to know them better than just their musical/reading/etc. tastes. Overall, I don’t have a big problem with the look, and am already growing to like it more and more. Tighten things up a bit and address some glaring issues and I think you’ll have a nice site here!
  77. SarahSeptember 04, 2009 @ 06:47 PM
The Own It column doesn't work. I miss the word total on the review column and also that I have to click to see the review.
  78. CherylSeptember 04, 2009 @ 06:49 PM
How do I look at my friends' book list?
  79. SofiaSeptember 04, 2009 @ 06:58 PM
what happent to comments and discussion boards?
  80. PyroSeptember 04, 2009 @ 07:05 PM
It's really dreadfull for now. How is it possible to chose from other collections of books than living social? Amazon.fr or Amazon.de for instance? There are definitly less books available. Especially in other languages. What about publishing the reviews on your facebook profile. Before, you could at least see a couple lines of the review! It's a total downgrade qualitatively. I understand the reasons behind it. Advertisement and mediocracy rules.
  81. LaurSeptember 04, 2009 @ 10:53 PM
I'm trying to get into my books to make changes, add, review and can't figure out how. Something's really not working right. I hope this is a glitch, albeit major, and that you fix it or return, even temporarily, to the older veresion, which worked fine. Or - contact Shelfari and work a venture with them!
  82. Hawk WeismanSeptember 05, 2009 @ 12:01 AM
It is both almost heroically ugly and rediculously slow and bloated.
  83. KristineSeptember 05, 2009 @ 02:36 AM
How do I remove a book from my collection? A help page would be pretty welcome.
  84. DinkySeptember 05, 2009 @ 02:42 AM
The banner does look sleek. Love the dropdown that let's you add to your collection. But overall I would agree with most of the comments. Too much unused spaced - the old one makes you see everything in one glance. Can't find my friends, confusing to navigate. If you want to change the colors - fine, but I'd prefer the old format. Best to have the user choose which look they want, that way you can determine which works best for everyone
  85. SariSeptember 05, 2009 @ 06:45 AM
Thanks for bringing the scroll arrow back! :)
  86. SariSeptember 05, 2009 @ 06:47 AM
Thank you for removing the percentages!
  87. TrishSeptember 05, 2009 @ 06:47 AM
I actually don't think it is so horrible, although I am having trouble updating my collection -- can't get it to change from want to read to already read. When I clicked on the book and went to that page, it worked. Also, can you not filter books anymore? I really liked that feature, but now when I click on an author's name, it brings up a list of ALL their books - I don't want to scroll through pages of books if I want to see what I have added out of a prolific authors writings. Keep working on those improvements!
  88. DaryaSeptember 05, 2009 @ 06:59 AM
Why can't I see my friends' books?
  89. BillySeptember 05, 2009 @ 07:24 AM
not a fan. why change something that didn't need changing? i'm sure it's just as good but now i have to find out how to use this one. where all the buttons are etc. i knew how to use the old one. it's like a supermarket moving all the aisles. just don't change it once i figure it out unless you're changing it back.
  90. Arni VidarSeptember 05, 2009 @ 08:26 AM
Adam and Keith. Have you not contemplated the fact that the user-base you have today you have BECAUSE they liked the way the site looked and functioned? Why would you even consider changing the entire page and ruin the entire functionality, at the risk of alienating your user-base? You have changed LivingSocial from a fun web-page that helped me manage my various collections and recommend my opinions and views to other users, to a Web 2.0 monster that does absolutely nothing but look good! To quote a book I particularly like, "Change for change's sake must be avoided". Web 2.0 is the worst thing ever to befall the internet, and designers seem to have completely forgotten that the average user does NOT have a 32" screen with 2000px or more screen real-estate. If this link works, it shows you how your page looks on my laptop that I use on a daily basis. The browser is full-screen at it's biggest resolution, 1280x800: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5697/whoooot.png ARE YOU KIDDING ME HERE? It's all wasted space! Waste waste waste! I don't want to go into the issues that others have mentioned, like stupid percentages over book covers and the whole 'visual' aspect being lost, but screen real-estate is a pet peeve of mine and you've managed to piss me off royally. Here is one severely disgruntled customer, hoping you'll undo this horror that has ruined this otherwise awesome web-page!
  91. KurtSeptember 05, 2009 @ 10:41 AM
I don't give star ratings for books, but now it looks like I do. The books I have reviewed are listed with a star rating. Presumably it is an "average," but it looks I tacked it on. I don't like this at all.
  92. AngieSeptember 05, 2009 @ 10:45 AM
I notice that when writing a review for a title, you can only type in what fits in the box; in other words, when the review gets longer than the box, the end of the review disappears below it and a scroll bar doesn't appear so we scroll down reread what we've typed. In other words if the review's too long, we are typing blind at the end and that is very annoying. I hope this is one the bugs that you are working out.
  93. FredSeptember 05, 2009 @ 10:52 AM
My bookshelf no longer looks like it's "mine". The new design makes my bookshelf look like it's just another "top 10 portal"; not something that speaks to me personally. Everything used to fit so snugly before. That's what made the bookshelf stand out so much. It really gave you the feeling that it was something you shared with your friends. Yes, people get used to changes, but I'm not sure I will still keep using the visual bookshelf.
  94. DanielSeptember 05, 2009 @ 11:47 AM
I do not like this layout at all. Please make a way to go back to the old dark layout. It was much better for me
  95. k.September 05, 2009 @ 12:19 PM
Sorry to say it but..... you really ruined a good thing here. The fact that you totally deconstructed a great application makes me think that nobody on your development team actually keeps a "Visual Bookshelf" of their own. Obviously you would not have made these changes if you had known the value of your own application. Maybe you should hire a librarian, or a bookstore owner to your staff, get some heartfelt feedback from someone who knows a thing or two about keeping bookshelves to help. Or just change it back to the way it was. Percentages over the book covers??? So disappointing.
  96. LindaSeptember 05, 2009 @ 12:19 PM
Really don't like it - can't find anything. Please put it back to the old format.
  97. MiraSeptember 05, 2009 @ 12:21 PM
The new layout is awful - could you please switch back to the old design? I absolutely dislike the numbers on the book covers and the huge white spaces. You can not overlook your bookshelve as easy as before anymore. Please go back to the old design - there was no need for a new design!
  98. John KerrySeptember 05, 2009 @ 12:31 PM
Well it is getting better. Wish some of the pictures could be bigger but that's probably not possible so I won't worry about that too much. You have responded to your user's concerns which is good (I know the two issued that I brought up have been solved and that is something I will say thanks for). However there are still a couple of things that need to be addressed. 1. My friends should be on my profile page. That was something I liked about the old format which is missing from this one. 2. Why oh why can we no longer search on the various Amazon sites. I couldn't even begin to count how many times I found something there that was not in the Social Living catalogue already. I have a feeling I may end up needlessly adding something to the database when it was sitting there in Amazon all the time. Oh yes, as regards "Trends" which some people have complained about. No big deal to me. It is something you have to click on to view so if you don't like just ignore that button.

  100. HannahSeptember 05, 2009 @ 05:18 PM
I have to say I prefer the old layout. The new layout looks pretty but it's far slower. The old layout was a lot easier to use and it's harder to find stuff on this new one. I have no idea where my old discussion thread is! Thanks for trying but you had a great layout anyway so there was no need to change it!
  101. BelindaSeptember 05, 2009 @ 07:47 PM

Agree with most of the comments here. I was going to purchase a book that I know a friend had read, but now I can't find it. Also, there is so much white space, you have to scroll to see anything.
  104. kierstenSeptember 05, 2009 @ 09:31 PM
thank you for putting back the arrows!!! but all the empty whitespace - AND the extra ad bar - is still highly irritating...my major complaints. i liked how "snug" everything was before. (i'm space-efficient, what can i say?) also, i'm annoyed by the percentages on the book covers and the extra link i have to go through to add a book to my collection. everything actually seems to be working fine now, for me, anyway. i just really don't like how it looks. thanks for the improvements so far, though...glad to see you respond to what people are posting. :)
  105. RachelSeptember 05, 2009 @ 09:38 PM
i can't change my reading status from "want to read" to "currently reading" or any of the other options..... :( i like the old version better even though this one looks nice...
  106. MystSeptember 06, 2009 @ 12:32 AM
i dont like this set-up. please change it back. ALSO: when books are added, are they put at the end or beginning of the list?
  107. AshleeSeptember 06, 2009 @ 04:05 AM
There needs to be a button for Friends so I can more easily see what they're reading and such.
  108. S.September 06, 2009 @ 05:58 AM
Think about the foreigners, put back the option to research books with amazon.de, fr or jp please...
  109. GillSeptember 06, 2009 @ 08:00 AM
Change is not always for the better. I agree with S. that being able to add books of other nationalities was a very good thing and I'm extremely sorry if this option has now been lost. I'd really like it if you could add a "re-reading" category, as I think re-reading is an important type of reading. Thank you for taking note of these comments.
  110. GillSeptember 06, 2009 @ 08:05 AM
P.S. I find it really annoying that as soon as I say that I'm reading a book, a window pops up asking me to review it. Obviously I'm not going to review a book I haven't finished! Please re-consider the purpose of this feature and remove it. Thanks.
  111. Laura PearleSeptember 06, 2009 @ 10:10 AM
I don't like the changes - for one thing, adding and editing a review are now far more difficult than before. It's not as elegant, far less easy to navigate, and several features are now hidden that used to be Front Page. Please reconsider.
  112. Christopher EarleSeptember 06, 2009 @ 10:28 AM
Been trying to add some books I read recently and find that it's now ABSOLUTELY impossible to figure out how to add books I read recently. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE what you've done to what was once a cool application for sharing your thoughts on books you've read. You should go back to the way it was and immediately fire the moron who made this change.
  113. lisaSeptember 06, 2009 @ 12:41 PM
as a "new living social bookshelf user" i am also unhappy with the change! i signed up less than a week before the change was made and loved it, and suddenly, THIS. i understand about bugs, but there seem to be significant issues -- visually and functionally -- and apparently many users don't like it....
  114. KassSeptember 06, 2009 @ 12:45 PM
Here's the good: I like the search bar at the top. It makes it easy to add books. Here's the bad: 1. The bigger font size. I preferred the smaller font size in the previous version. 2. When viewing my book collection, the entire frame doesn't load so the x's in the circle (I suppose to delete a book) are partially cut off. Perhaps this is an issue with my browser (I use Firefox). I have to concur with some of the previous assessments that I liked Living Social Books as it was: a straightforward no-nonsense application. It didn't bother me that it didn't look Web 2.0. The fact of the matter is that it WORKED. I recently uninstalled the weRead application because I enjoyed Living Social's interface so much more. I'll give it some time because I think some more tweaking in terms of design and functionality still needs to be done but if it remains less user-friendly for a long period of time, I may switch to weRead. I really hope you guys do take these constructive criticisms into consideration. But thanks for trying to make Living Social a more enjoyable experience for your users.
  115. JamileSeptember 06, 2009 @ 12:56 PM
This is one change too many! After all the work I've put into creating my collection, top-rated books, and reviews, I feel that the new site has tampered with that work in a very disrespectful and inconsiderate way!!!! Are you trying to encourage us users to give up on your application? I will gladly do so the minute I can get my collection transfered to another more respectful and considerate site!
  116. NancySeptember 06, 2009 @ 02:49 PM
For Visual Bookshelf: Ok, this is pretty, but I don't use it for "pretty," I use it for function. The pale blue (esp. the blue on blue buttons on the "collection" page) is very hard for anybody with vision issues, so it does not work for an entire segment of the population. The older I get, the more I value clear contrast, and blue on blue just does not make the grade. Along with others' complaints, the increased white space which forces users to scroll all the time is silly and pointless. The percentages have no appeal and should be scrapped. And, "recommendations" of books already in my library ... ?!?!? As a top 50 reader with almost 4K of books in my list, I would hate to give it up, but these changes might just make me leave. If the trend continues, my leaving will be guaranteed. And, I sent you an email and there has been no response at all. Guess you don't want me!
  117. MilesSeptember 06, 2009 @ 03:33 PM
    (1) It's now uglier. The old look was plain, but quite practical and appealing. Problems with the new look: (a) unpleasant lime green color dominates; mixed with pastel tones for the other colors, and it's a truly unpleasant effect (b) widgets and text are now _much_ larger, and the layout seems to have a lot more unnecessary whitespace (vast swathes of it). The result of this, of course, is that almost nothing fits on a single page, and one has to do much more scrolling around, and it feels "empty". (c) a funny sort of "playskool" vibe -- besides the excessively large everything, rounded corners all over the place, big thick graphical borders around stuff, the lime color and pastels, etc. Most cringe-inducing. (2) It's much, _much_ slower -- almost any action that changes the page seems to take forever, and sometimes the page loading simply never finishes (3) Seems very buggy -- images misaligned or with the wrong size (which were displayed correctly in the old interface), etc Yes, people need time to adapt to change, even good change, but this redesign feels gratuitous and ham-handed, the sort of toy design someone does to test out a new infrastructure, not a well-considered and tested upgrade to a popular app.
  118. DanSeptember 06, 2009 @ 03:43 PM
Another vote to bring back non-USA book searches. It was bad enough when they tried consolidating titles in different languages, but now that they are gone altogether, it is at least as useless if not moreso. I don't really mind the aesthetic changes, but there should be a "minimal" option, so as to reduce unnecessary clutter. It also wouldn't hurt to have an option to revert to the old working application while testing the new broken one.
  119. QWERTYSeptember 06, 2009 @ 04:38 PM
Hello what has been said here about people with vision issues is totally true, i am one of them and i can barely see anything. Also i cannot find my friends list and when i browsed one book i liked to see people that had read the same books as me. I suppose that will be fixed, because of what you have written up there, but please do something about those pale colours and tiny letters there is so much blank space... actually seeing something is more important than how it looks... Anyway if i have to be honest i liked the old look much more and i have been thinking of leaving this application. Another important thing: percentages do make it look cheap. Sorry.
  120. me againSeptember 06, 2009 @ 04:44 PM
I forgot about something... I have found that many really important and good books have a big thing on the top that say stuff like You couldo do worse, only if you are bored, etc. I think that is just disrespectful and, yes, again, cheap. I mean, just because the percentage of people that liked it you cannot deny their importance or if it is good or bad. Really i think that this has been thought to rate terrible books or maybe to be rated by terrible people who just read whatever other people read. I don't know, i insist, the word to describe it is just... cheap.
  121. SophieSeptember 06, 2009 @ 04:56 PM
i still can't add any books to the visual bookshelf lists when i go to edit.... i don't know if this is just another technical glitch, but i'd really like to update my lists on a regular basis. Please and thank you, Keith and Adam.............
  122. CarlaSeptember 06, 2009 @ 06:26 PM
I like it. I like the colours, the new font and haven't had any problems of yet. It looks like there has been a great overreaction to what some people have clearly worked very hard on - well done team :) My only question is I cannot see the drop down list to choose to search at Amazon if Living Social hasn't turned up my result.
  123. Pamela CitronSeptember 06, 2009 @ 07:18 PM
Think you need to go back to work on the site. It doesn't work. I just kept clicking around and finally found what I needed, but didn't leave breadcrumbs. I doubt I'll ever be able to find the tools I wanted again. May have to go look for another Book site. Will keep trying suggest you do the same.
  124. MikeSeptember 06, 2009 @ 08:02 PM
Is there any way that you guys can consolidate multiple entries for the same book? I'm not referring to different editions of the same work; instead, I'm referring to the SAME title, edition, and volume being entered as different works. Also, I am in agreement with the majority of commenters here. That is, the new "makeover" is crap and the old version was many times superior to it in every way.
  125. LisaSeptember 06, 2009 @ 08:39 PM
How it LOOKS is much less important than whether it WORKS. The functionality I'd like to see is a way to get the list of books I want to read into excel or at least print it. Do your designers have actual users usability test these changes before release? I find it hard to believe that they do because the useabiltiy keeps deteriorating. I agree with the others that it might be time to bail.
  126. MichelleSeptember 06, 2009 @ 10:39 PM
Thank you so much for bringing the scrolling carousels back! Seriously, it was one of my favorite things about Visual Bookshelf. I'm still not entirely pleased with the overall look of the new design.. too much white/empty space for my liking. Would there be any way to maybe make the thumbnails for the books bigger? I can barely see what titles are on my lists. Other than that, I don't have much of a problem with the new design (though I still prefer the older version better, sorry!)
  127. RichardSeptember 06, 2009 @ 10:39 PM
I can't find my "book friends" and see what they are reading. Why did you change it? Why don't you just change your name to Microsoft and we will all understand why.
  128. GaylaSeptember 07, 2009 @ 01:09 PM
I hate the changes. Where are the reader reviewes. Site is totaly unusable and worthless now.
  129. JuliaSeptember 07, 2009 @ 01:16 PM
I don't like the changes, nothing works right. Site doesn't work and it's worthless now
  130. ElinSeptember 07, 2009 @ 03:07 PM
Why is there no place for people to discuss the books any more? Also the site somehow looks more.....commercial. Like it's a place for changing money rather then thoughts and idées.
  131. ElinSeptember 07, 2009 @ 03:38 PM
Ok I hade something more to say....if you now feel like changing things, why not make it more interactive. Making it possible to comment on people's review's or something. People simply writing their opinon is not a "conversation".
  132. Ivete AchadinhaSeptember 07, 2009 @ 04:19 PM
I have to agree with everyone else...I really do NOT like the new changes. The old Visual Bookshelf was much easier to navigate and user friendly.
  133. JosephSeptember 07, 2009 @ 04:44 PM
It looks nice and works well for me. It has a fresher and more modern look over all. I just don't understand why you can't include a "date finished" column under the "Collection"-tab. It might not be important to everybody, but I find it very interesting to know not only that I read a book, but also when, or how long ago I read it!
  134. Jerry AtricSeptember 07, 2009 @ 06:03 PM
Absolutely horrible in every way. I've never met a web-designer who wasn't an incompetant asshole.

  136. mariesseySeptember 08, 2009 @ 01:39 AM
Thank you for adding back the scrolling book covers....under books read...now..much better..don't change this ability to scroll in all topics. It ruins the effect....
  137. RachelSeptember 08, 2009 @ 05:22 AM
I agree with the other comments. While I can understand that an initial code push would have problems, the lack of basic functionality in the new release shows some pretty serious issues. The new scheme is visually nice, but there's a lot of unnecessary space/color/etc. For the facebook interface, especially, something more streamlined is needed (otherwise it just looks crowded and you can't find anything). Please consider rolling back the changes until you've worked out these issues. Otherwise the application is pretty much useless, and all you end up with are a lot of frustrated users.
  138. CarinaSeptember 08, 2009 @ 11:56 AM
the friends section has disapeared! where can i see my friends and the books they are reading? i like it better the way it was before. i find it hard now to finds things. the more you touch it the more you screw it!

  140. BelindaSeptember 08, 2009 @ 02:32 PM
It is rubbish, why make things more confusing? It was fine and simple before. All this 'white space' is not a good look. I used to enjoy putting up books i have read, this has put me right off...

  143. Dave CarmickSeptember 08, 2009 @ 04:28 PM
Love the visual bookshelf, however am not a fan of the new layout. I don't mind the font/design but a lot of the browsing functions are worse or seem to be gone altogether. My suggestion would be keep the aesthetic change (although I was equally fine with the last one) but bring back the old interface.
  144. Cela NeusSeptember 08, 2009 @ 05:02 PM
Well, it seems the answer is clear : everybody hates it ! I'll join the choir : I cannot search for new books, I don't see how to add books, I don't see my friends books. This is utterly useless for me.
  145. BevSeptember 08, 2009 @ 09:03 PM
How do I add friends and how do I see my friends' books and see their comments? I must admit I am confused!
  146. DanSeptember 08, 2009 @ 11:22 PM
Book search is still broken. Seriously, how hard is it to add a few Amazon links? If there's a non-technical problem with the search, at least let users do their own searches and post links to recognized book sites. Manually adding the title, author, ISBN, description, and image becomes quite a ridiculous waste of time when that is all easily accessible in numerous locations on the web already.
  147. MikeSeptember 09, 2009 @ 02:19 AM
    (1) Overall I like the new fonts - easier to read on my laptop (2) What's with the ridiculous amount of whitespace? It doesn't add anything and makes it harder to view your collection. (3) Agree with "me again" comment on 9/06 @ 04:44 PM, that "Only if you're bored" is annoying and condescending. I should only read top-40 books?
  148. AnnamarieSeptember 09, 2009 @ 11:46 AM
I hate it, and I want the old layout back!
  149. TsetsiSeptember 09, 2009 @ 01:18 PM
I set my settings so that my "reading now" would appear in two rows in my FB profile, well, still all i have is one row and for some reason all three rows - reading, read, will read, collapse into one... then all the reviews appear on my FB profile, while according to my settings there should be no reviews! On top of it all, if I edit a review, it appears again, as if it's a new one, so now i've like a bunch of reviews for the same book, none which I want to have on my profile to begin with! I just want only my books on my profile, why is that so damn hard? grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
  150. TsetsSeptember 09, 2009 @ 01:21 PM

Why did you have to change what was not broken? I don't even like the new look.
  153. NancySeptember 09, 2009 @ 04:53 PM
Why is VB recommending books to me that are already in my collection? And, since I don't get books based on the recommendations anyway, why not make it smaller so that it doesn't matter. This "in my face" recommendation of books I have already is very annoying! BTW - please get rid of the meaningless percentages!
  154. SorenSeptember 09, 2009 @ 05:39 PM
Your product and QA team should all be fired, this is the worst release I have ever seen!!

Please!!!! do something, I cannot even read my friends' comments because somehow they don't show up!!! they just come up whenever they want to (or your own server wants to) fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it!!!! it's really annoying! i like your app but this technical problem totally KILLS the fun!!!!

i miss the old streamlined look better. sad that it changed. :(
  157. BobSeptember 10, 2009 @ 12:17 AM
On the albums, we can no longer search on Amazon and for a classical music user like me, I'm going to be working for you adding so many albums. Second, you no longer let us download our collection. Thankfully, I downloaded it before you switched. If these things aren't fixed soon, I'm gone.
  158. ManuelaSeptember 10, 2009 @ 01:24 AM
Guys, I'm switching to another book app, that's just ridiculous! There is no discussion any more, I have no control over my reviews or activity, I can't even adjust the tab the way I want it - I really don't want to share all my activity with just everybody, and there's no option to just not include all that info... oh! wait, there is an option... but it doesn't work! what's wrong with you, people?! Now I can't even save my list, thanks a mil, you're losing people like never before!
  159. ShinSeptember 10, 2009 @ 01:51 AM
The bottom left side of the page has been giving me error message and doesn't show anything so I don't know the space is for ads or there supposed to be some functions. Also, I really need to see all of my friends who have who are on the visual bookshelf. It is much better for me to be able to see books I read horizontally and not vertically, and to be able to see all of the books I'm reading easily, which was done better through older version of the application.
  160. Shin September 10, 2009 @ 01:56 AM
Where is all of those search functions using foreign language (i.e. Japanese, French, etc..) utilizing other (amazon) database? Why did you remove it? I've been using Japanese amazon really often and that was the only way to search and add Japanese books. It's been so hard to use and please do not remove crucial function without explanation. I might have to switch to another application if visual bookshelf does not allow me to search and add Japanese books. Also, add a book myself is wasting time unless there is no other alternatives since we all know amazon Japan, UK, etc... has function to search the book with cover photo, which is another important function.
  161. BettinaSeptember 10, 2009 @ 03:31 AM
It's not good! Why fix it if it ain't broken? The font is ugly, the colours are too pale, it looks messy... please change it back!
  162. Jen OvertonSeptember 10, 2009 @ 05:18 AM
I know theres still bugs you're ironing out, but I am really missing not being able to see my friends, their collections, their friends also with bookshelves and discussions. I dont even know which of my friends have bookshelves anymore. These were the things i used to love about the Bookshelf, like a big book club, but now I can't. Hope this is going to be fixed.
  163. KarenSeptember 10, 2009 @ 08:14 AM
HATE this new layout! I am about ready to dump this app because it is so frustratingly ugly! I appreciate all your hard work, but why don't you web designers ever poll your customers before you make these sweeping changes? The old page was really user-friendly and visually pleasing; sleek and smart. Now it's just a bunch of white spaces, the fonts are too big, can't see everything at a glance. Ugh.......
  164. kathrynSeptember 10, 2009 @ 11:43 AM
I am still just waiting around for things to get fixed.. could you share a date with us when it would be a good idea to come back and find everything working again? I just get frustrated each time i visit my page and find it not working, and looking to awful.. day after day. I am sure you have an idea now of what everybody HATES about the new look, and hopefully that is what you are busy busy working on fixing right now. Aside from that, here are a few things I would love to see new to visual bookshelf... now is a good a time as any right? -A 'Reading Again' option. Plenty of us read something more than once. -Book lists for each year (complete with scrolling arrows and cover art free of those ridiculous percentages) that myself and my friends can click on... 2007, 2008, 2009 etc. It would be a very nice way to keep track of a persons tastes at a particular time.. "did i read 20 books or 100 in 2008" ...hmm, let me check my list. "When was it that i read all the japanese literature.... let me check my list" you get the picture. If you took a little more information when we started and finished a book the books could just go to the list automatically. -Personal notes to go with each book... where we bought the book, was it a gift, a special find at a used book store, did you pick it up in some far away airport while on an exciting holiday. If you are going to make changes you should be adding to the application... not taking away. Have you checked out Shelfari? Their application is not nearly as good as the old visual bookshelf, but they are leaps and bounds ahead of you now.
  165. LoriSeptember 10, 2009 @ 12:44 PM
Wish I could see my friends' lists again. Also, it keeps recommending books I have already read. Where are the discussion boards? :(
  166. SergeSeptember 10, 2009 @ 01:57 PM
I only use the Albums feature so my comments are only about that. Adding an album to my collection is far from being a "one click affair" as you claim. Adding a review and a rating are done much like before, with a control popping up to let me enter these. There is still no pop-up to let me chose "own it/don't want it/etc...". I use to be able to select this by opening the link for the album I was adding, but now that control is GONE from the album page. Now, to select whether I own or borrowed the album I need to go by to My Collection, a useless extra step that was not needed before. And what makes this particular extra step even more of a chore is the dissapearance of the Filter for My Collection. What if I just recently bought an album that I had heard 2 years ago? I would want to open My Collection, find that album and change it to "own it", but now without any filter I have to browse through pages and pages of my collection to find it. How is removing a very basic functionality like this any kind of improvement to your application? I second all the complaints about the dissapearance of the Amazon links to find items. People will NOT enter them manually, forget about it! Bring the Amazon links back, and if you cannot for some reason involving your partnership with Amazon not letting you anymore, then replace them with other links to music databases (like Gracenote's CDDB). And if your partnership with Amazon is still valid, then could you look into changing the links to individual songs on each album page to play the song sample from Amazon instead of a dodgy YouTube video somebody filmed with their cell phone? (this is an actual REQUEST for improvement... 80% of songs are NOT available on YouTube, whereas Amazon as samples for just about everything). Bring back the option to export my collection to a CSV file (again, why REMOVE features in the first place?), and yes go back to your drawing board about all this useless white space!
  167. S.September 10, 2009 @ 02:43 PM
Ok Friends are back, but no scrolling... pfff seriously this is getting ridiculous... And there is still no possibly to search through Amazon. jp, fr, etc. What a joke... But these annoying useless percentage are still there...
  168. KeithSeptember 10, 2009 @ 03:02 PM
Serge, thanks for your feedback - the ownership options are available in the add to collection button from the album's page. If you add an album to your collection from there, the ownership options fold out from the menu automatically. The functionality is similar to the radio button menus from before.
  169. Mr. BSSeptember 10, 2009 @ 03:08 PM
....can't search non-English language films and books any more That's very disappointing. I searched for a foreign language film that was already in my collection and got a message saying it can't be found. I guess the data you're mining is not very useful for Hollywood marketing execs if none of my films are available in the US.
  170. KailashSeptember 10, 2009 @ 03:37 PM
"NEW AND IMPROVED"? That is a very optimistice statement especially since nothing works. So who gives a flying cow about a prettier sight if it does not allow the user to perform the most basic action.
  171. SCSeptember 10, 2009 @ 05:47 PM
I am extremely PISSED that all the books that I've read in French or marked have been converted into the equivalent books in English !!! Why ?? I wanted the distinction between the books I had read in French or in English for a purpose !!! And I've just find out too that my books have been all mixed up ! They're no longer in the order I have read them !! This is so irritating !
  172. Nancy ColtonSeptember 10, 2009 @ 06:32 PM
This look is updated, but nothing works on the site. I'm only glad that is seems to have retainede the 75+ books I've already logged in, but I can't get to any of the information. The "new look" is not work the functionability going out the door. GO BACK until the bugs are worked. Rolling something out that doesn't work....doesn't work.

Re. VB: Thanks for the updates. I'm happy to see my reading friends again; the scroll bar & top rated books are back on my profile; & most of the annoying percentage rates are gone from there- though they all still show in my recent activity & the main page. The "Trends" are useless for me, but as pointed out above, I can ignore the tab & will do so. Since you guys are still updating, here's a few things for my VB wishlist: - An option for "rereading" or "reading again". - The option to pick which book image to use. - The ability to isolate a reading status in my "collection" tab & remove the images to create a more useful, printable list, like it was before. I can't be the only user to print & shop off their "want" list?? - Removal of the remaining cheap-looking pecentage signs - Recommendations that I haven't already read - Friend scroll on home page - Roughly half of my book collection total amount contains books I want to read. How about an option so it only contains books I've read? TIA & GL

Some of the books I read are way off the radar and I'd rather not have the popularity rating. Can you make it so that I can hide the percentage thing above every book? Otherwise the new look is fine by me.
  181. kierstenSeptember 11, 2009 @ 04:42 PM
hi, back again. glad to see you're still improving! thanks! i'd still like to see all the empty whitespace and the borders around album covers go (and the extra ad bar below my picture...i feel like it's part of my profile when it's down there)...and i've discovered that many of my book covers are being cut off at the bottom, so you can only see part of the covers. one more thing: I agree with most of the suggestions offered by "Jo" six posts above mine, especially the one of for a "rereading" button. thanks :)
  182. DanSeptember 12, 2009 @ 10:37 AM
I am somewhat pleased to see the return of the Amazon searches. I am still missing the direct link to Amazon, in case I might actually want more information on a book. Also, in concurrence with the post by SC above, I am VERY DISPLEASED by the fact that certain non-English books and all translations are indiscriminately lumped into a single entry. Just as an English translation by one translator tells a very different story from an English translation by another translator, any translation most likely tells a very different story from the original. Therefore, ALL TRANSLATIONS AND ORIGINALS MUST EACH BE CONSIDERED SEPARATELY. VB has been on the wrong side of this issue since before the makeover, but it's never too late to correct. However, assuming this is not corrected, there are alternatives to VB elsewhere, if not directly connected to Facebook, for more serious cataloguers and social readers.
  183. fredSeptember 12, 2009 @ 10:50 AM
Is there any chance the visual bookshelf can display all the relevant info in as little space as possible? The rival Facebook application of weRead does this quite well, though the rest of their layout isn't quite as good.
  184. Mary DionneSeptember 12, 2009 @ 06:04 PM
I am now reading The Eleventh Victim by Nancy Grace. Very Good Book. I have read The Sister's Keeper by Jodi Poducult & MISTAKEN IDENTITY by, Don & Susie Van Ryn & Newell , Colleen & Whitney Cerak, Very Intersting. I have read alot of books by V. C. Andrews.

Hi. I'm pretty new to this Virtual Booikshelf... but I liked the idea! HOwver... I cannot ADD any books to my list! Can somebody help me? How can I modify my lists? I finished two books that were not on my list, I also started reading a couple more that were not listed...? this is frustrating!
  186. Not ImportantSeptember 12, 2009 @ 10:40 PM
Too bulky. Reminds me of Microsoft software; it has more features than needed, the display is bulky, and has no clear template that is easy to navigate within a glance. I'll be keeping my eyes open for a better books app.

The "Top Rated Books" section should not always show the same few books, for those of us who have read a dozen or more 5-star books. They should rotate around! I can tell you guys are trying to improve the overhaul. I really hated it at first but I'm trying to get used to it... Keep listening to our suggestions please!
  191. BobSeptember 13, 2009 @ 04:14 PM
I'd like to thank the developers of LivingSocial for correcting a couple of complaints in such a timely manner. My complaints were 1) We couldn't download our album collections to our computers, and 2) We couldn't browse alternative search engines such as Amazon. I am a classical collector and some can be a bit more difficult to find than popular music. All I can say is, BRAVO!! :)
  192. SteveSeptember 14, 2009 @ 08:41 AM

  193. LindseySeptember 14, 2009 @ 11:23 PM

I don't mind the changes, but would *really* appreciate some explanation of the percentages that are shown. How do they relate to the star ratings? I can't begin to imagine how to get from 4.5 stars --> 75% liked it. More detail, please?
  198. KeithSeptember 15, 2009 @ 05:24 PM
Hi g, The percentage ratings show the overall community rating for an item while star ratings show an individual person's rating. Previously we tried to show multiple rating states within the star rating and it was a little confusing. So at the end of the day, the individual star ratings that all users provide for an item are averaged out to the percentages you now see. Thanks for writing! keith.
  199. JaeSeptember 15, 2009 @ 06:58 PM
I do not like the new look...each change in the last 18 months has diminished the 'user friendliness' of the app. I am not just a casual user. I use it often...almost daily. The app has become inaccessible on my Blackberry and I don't know if it is you or them that has that kink to iron out. I have also reported many duplicate listings only to find that the quality listing and therefore my reviews have been deleted while the less accurate listing is still in tact. Having the largest number of 'adds' does not make a listing the best. There are descriptions, reviews, photos and the 'quality' to be considered. The % listings are a nice addition, if a little awkward in their display. The placement of 'super reviews' at the top of the list is also nice, however, I think that more weight should be given to the 'top 25 reviewers' even if their reviews are less wordy. It is the experienced beer knurds that I want to hear from not just the most verbose. I have put alot of time into this app and I do enjoy it. Thanx for you time. Cheers.
  200. John KerrySeptember 15, 2009 @ 07:01 PM
Well it seems most of my concerns have been met. I don't like the percentages on the pictures but I can live with it I suppose. Maybe you could add a bar above or below them though to show the percentages. Just a thought. I am getting used to it. Prefer the old version but I if we are stuck with this one then so be it. TTFN
  201. JaeSeptember 15, 2009 @ 08:11 PM
Just to add that I do like the friends layout much better than that virtually unusable scroll crap before. Again, thanx and cheers!
  202. DaveSeptember 16, 2009 @ 03:04 AM
whatever program you are using for the review application is horrible. It skips and stalls so badly that you can't type a review without hesitating for every letter to appear. I'm not likely to write a review on a book anytime soon, which is one of the features I liked for my own use in looking back on the books I've read.

Firefox isn't very compatible with this new layout in Facebook, but I like the new design in Explorer. One minor detail - under My Profile, shouldn't the "My Recent Activity" feed be higher on the page since that's the most dynamic portion of the page? I think it should switch places with "My Top Rated Books" but atleast come before "Reviews I've Written".
  210. JSeptember 20, 2009 @ 07:09 PM
I'm not really wild about this new look, I feel that it was easier to use the way it looked before. Websites recently have had an obsession with redoing their look to make the site easier when it just makes it more cluttered and confusing. I also wish that I didn't have to look at each individual review to see if it is a super review, I like it better when it just stated that on my page. I used to use this app as a goal setter for reading, but I haven't been on nearly has much now that it's been redone.
  211. MariAtlSeptember 20, 2009 @ 08:56 PM
I know its just symantics, but would there be a way to distinguish between books I "already read" and books I "just finished reading"? I like being able to see stuff that everyone has read, but different conversations happen over books that were just finished. If all are marked "already read" you don't know if its worth talking about now.

This is confusing as hell. I have never seen such a confusing site on Facebook to be honest. Why can't it just be put in the restautant name and then press the button space to find it ect. Jeesh...
  214. NancySeptember 22, 2009 @ 01:31 PM
Why did you get rid of the link to report a problem with the listing? I have used that link OFTEN to correct an author listing (especially when yours says "unknown" and I have the name). Please put it back.
  215. kathrynSeptember 23, 2009 @ 06:19 PM
Its getting better.. inch by a little, thank you for working on it. The book covers are still chopped off on the bottom though, often leaving the title or authors name missing from view.. could you take a look into that? I would also love a "reading again option".

Please redesign the control to write reviews. Having each character typed send a request-response to the website is causing frustrating typing lag. I'm sure it works fine in your testing but for anyone without a business-level high speed connection it is simply unpractical. All this just to count the number of words in real time? The simple text box and having the words counted upon hitting the "Save" button was working fine before, thank you.

I accidently started a conversation about a book, when only trying to leave a review... apparently the format for doing that has recently changed. Now i can't delete it, why is that? I don't actually want to chat about the book, so if you could please make an option to delete conversation topics, i would greatly appreciate it.
  222. KarinOctober 20, 2009 @ 01:56 PM
I miss being able to check out a book in my collection to see how many other people have read it. The percentage of who liked the book means nothing if you can't connect it with quantifiable data.
  223. Nanci November 02, 2009 @ 07:37 PM

I don't much care what the format is; I can probably adapt to anything you put up. However, I would like to be able to contact living social books, but can't. Whenever I click on a link, I get an error message which says that "default email client is improperly installed." First, I don't know what that means, and don't know how to find out. Second, my email works fine with everyone but you guys, so I think the problem must be yours rather than mine. (Except that I have a problem with not being able to contact you.) Third, the reason I want to contact you is that I can't get living social books to connect with my Facebook page so that my FB friends can see what I'm doing. Your help pages don't help at all. Can anyone help?
