New Feature: Improved shelf management 121

Posted by Tim

We've received quite a few pieces of feedback from everyone, that, when taken together, made us realize we had to provide better management tools for your shelves. Common suggestions and feedback we have received are generally around the following:

- It's not easy to delete an item from your bookshelf you have mistakenly added twice or don't want anymore
- There is no way to clear a rating
- There is no way to edit a review
- It's impossible to sort by rating or by author

Of course there are more ideas we've received, but all in all, they usually asked directly and indirectly for better ways to manage your collections. We're pleased to have recently launched a new tab entitled "Manage" that helps solve many of these problems. You'll find a spreadsheet-like interface that allows you to edit and modify most of your information right from the "Manage" page. If you get the chance, see what books you've read but are yet to review, add ratings to those you haven't read, or delete a book you've inadvertently added twice.

Dear Tim, Do you think it would be possible that in the MANAGEMENT Feature we could drag and move the books to put them in the order we've read them...?? Thanks! Daniana
  2. KristenMay 19, 2008 @ 11:33 AM
    I love it. Thank you.
  3. CarolineMay 19, 2008 @ 06:52 PM
Unless there is a way to do this and I'm just missing it, it would be great to be able to move my books around on my shelf. Right now, I've got a lot of books I don't particularly care for being featured on my page.
  4. CathyMay 19, 2008 @ 08:30 PM
Now that I have added quite a lot of books and movies I would like to export them to my computer - excel will do - so that I can see more easily and when I'm off line what books I have read.
  5. KellyMay 19, 2008 @ 10:43 PM
A drag & drop would be great I'd love to put books in any order I choose, otherwise great app :)
  6. AmandaMay 19, 2008 @ 11:59 PM
I would really appreciate a way to group books on different shelves by subject, author, or genre. The way the list is now, it can be huge to scan through.
  7. Ron RothammerMay 23, 2008 @ 05:58 AM
Drag & drop feature so that the bookshelf can be arranged better would be great.
  8. amy McIntoshMay 24, 2008 @ 09:24 PM
I think it is too hard to rate a book. I can't figure out exactlyh how to do it. soemtimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Why isn't this rock dumb easy?
  9. DominiqueMay 25, 2008 @ 03:47 AM
I'd really like to have the option of displaying not only what friends I have who use the application, but also the books they are reading. Like what iread has. But I can't be bothered moving to iread so please add this option :)
  10. GerdaMay 25, 2008 @ 01:06 PM
I love the new management facility, and have already made use of it. I would like to see a category 'owned it', as so many books get borrowed never to return!
  11. AntoniaMay 25, 2008 @ 03:06 PM
I'd like more ways to sort books: e.g., books for work, books for pleasure, serious literature, light pleasure reading, cookbooks, etc.
  12. AliedaMay 26, 2008 @ 06:56 PM
I agree, I have just been waiting for a drag & drop feature that will let me organize my visual library any way that I want. Otherwise though, this is my favorite app, great job!
  13. ChrisMay 27, 2008 @ 02:25 AM
Additional categories for owned would be nice, there are a number of books I've either borrowed from friends or the library that I don't own but wouldn't blatantly toss into the categories want / don't want
  14. SarahMay 28, 2008 @ 08:45 AM
Same as Caroline, it would be great if we could order the books that show up on our profile, and choose which ones to display. =)
  15. Laila AnnMay 28, 2008 @ 04:48 PM
I would love to see some streamlining. My main complaint about the application is that the same book may be available to add by different publishers, or with a different cover, and when going through recommendations when a book is offered I add it, and later find out that i had already added it. Please offer the books by Title/Author, and not so terribly many of the same book over and over. Otherwise I use this application most often and like it moreso than the other similar applications. Thank you.
  16. VanessaMay 30, 2008 @ 03:23 AM
Hello, Great application. However, would it be possible to show the leaders (among the readers) according to the number of reviews written, not only the number of books added ? thank you !
  17. Emma May 30, 2008 @ 04:25 AM
Definitely, being able to rearrange them would be very helpful ;-)
  18. TylerMay 30, 2008 @ 11:11 AM
I would also like to see the option of "perused" or "partially read" or something to that effect that denotes not a full read but read a portion. Overall great app. I like the changes and the addition of the management tab. I also echo the calls for being able to arrange the order of your books.
  19. VaishaliMay 30, 2008 @ 12:09 PM
Please give the option to bookmark/the page no. where we last read the book we are reading!!. I often restart reading for the simple reason I dont remember the last page I was on.
  20. AshMay 31, 2008 @ 08:49 AM
Please create a way (preferably an easy one) to move the books in the order that you want them. thanks
  21. LauraJune 02, 2008 @ 03:40 PM
Is there a way to sort alphabetically? Or to view all books on one page? Having to page back and forth, with no perceptible order to the titles, is frustrating. Thank you!
  22. TaraJune 02, 2008 @ 04:20 PM
I'd like to be able to add books that I've read, want to read, or am reading more easily. I find the layout to be awkward. What would be great is to be able to click one of those options next to ever book that pops up.
  23. TracieJune 02, 2008 @ 06:18 PM
I also would like to place the books in my own order, not just the order they were entered in. I'd like to be able to click and drag - or something to put them in the order I'd like them to be seen. Everyone likes to arrange their own bookshelf.
  24. TracieJune 02, 2008 @ 06:19 PM

  25. KristenJune 02, 2008 @ 08:51 PM
I love this application, but I agree. I would like to be able to move the book icons into an order I find logical. Also, why are so many of the same books listed separately. You shouldn't let people enter new books untill they search and find it not on the list. Thank you for making such a great program!!!!
  26. Mark In IrvineJune 03, 2008 @ 12:00 PM
I have 2 FaceBook accounts, for 2 different groups of friends. Is there a way to combine my book lists from the two accounts so that the same items appear on both pages without having to re-type everything? Thanks for the App - it is great.
  27. dave powellJune 03, 2008 @ 05:49 PM
I'd like something that gives you a history of when you read the books on your list - obviously this wouldn't work for old books you are adding that you've already read, but for books that you've read since adding the application it would be good to know when you read them and in what order.
  28. JulietJune 03, 2008 @ 10:06 PM
I agree with Laila Ann, I get frustrated when I'm adding books and see so many different editions of the same book. If there was a way to link the different editions together or something so that I don't get confused and ad the same book over and over because I don't remember if I had it added. Also, if I pick an edition that is different than the popular one, it doesn't get included in the ratings.
  29. BeverlyJune 05, 2008 @ 12:33 PM
I would really appreciate a way to group books on different shelves by subject, author, or genre. Also, to be able to personized a shelf of books would be neat: RE: My Haiku Books
  30. HbJune 06, 2008 @ 07:45 PM
I find it really irritating that every single version of a book is here. Some are not even designated as being any different, so there are like 5 of the same book listed. I understand the need for different version listings when it is significant, such as a book club version or a significantly revised edition, but it gets confusing with every single version being listed. See "Practical Demon Keeping" if you want to see what I mean. Or any Christopher Moore book for that matter.
  31. JimJune 09, 2008 @ 07:05 AM
Thanks for adding the management tab - but why isn't 'export/download an xml/csv of your data' option included? Give us our data, please?
  32. EddieJune 09, 2008 @ 10:36 AM
Export is definitely on the roadmap, don't worry, we won't lock up your data. We're going to expose APIs too.
  33. AndreaJune 09, 2008 @ 08:29 PM
Maybe including a genre catagory? I'm sure it's been suggested but that would be an amazing addition. Thank you so much for all you have done!
  34. SusanJune 09, 2008 @ 08:57 PM
Is there a way to put checked out from library instead of owning or not owning a book.
  35. bbbcoJune 11, 2008 @ 12:04 PM
I would like to see a reports feature that would allow me to generate reports about myself or my friends and save or print off (very handy for making wish lists, etc).
  36. KimJune 11, 2008 @ 05:23 PM
Is there any way to add a button where you can find friends who already have the visual bookshelf application? I have several friends who added the application prior to me, and I cannot invite them.... So how can I show them under Friends Who Read???
  37. Kelli AnneJune 11, 2008 @ 07:47 PM
I second the idea of being able to arrange our shelf by genre, author, alphabetical or whatever works. It would make it so much easier to look through the shelf and see what is there.
  38. jessyeJune 12, 2008 @ 12:22 PM
i can't seem to find a link to update my profile.like a link to show what book i am currently reading
  39. jintyJune 13, 2008 @ 12:05 PM
would love to be able to record to whom I have lent a book and then be able to mark it returned when ( and if! ) it is.
  40. Bill SipperJune 15, 2008 @ 11:56 AM
How do I have the WE BOOKS application show up on my Facebook page?
  41. stephenJune 15, 2008 @ 12:56 PM
Hi Tim, it seems that when we import from librarything, visual bookshelf grabs book identities but not any other information. Wouldn't it make more sense to have it grab reading status, ratings, reviews, and so forth?
  42. DruJune 18, 2008 @ 04:17 PM
I'd like to be able to generate a list for "want to own".
  43. Majok IDLJune 19, 2008 @ 11:55 PM
When I click on the "read more" link of a review (from your application box on my Hi5 Profile page), it briefly states "loading" followed by the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"; can never get to the review from there. Thanks for addressing this bug.
  44. angelaJune 21, 2008 @ 11:04 PM
I would like to remove some books from my profile page, but I'm unable to. Any suggestions???????? thanks
  45. CarolineJune 24, 2008 @ 05:30 AM
Hi, this tool is fantastic, but I just get tired of always getting the same recommendations, for example the same book may arise in different editions, even if I already said I was not interested. Do you think you could improve this? Thank you very much.
  46. AshleyJune 24, 2008 @ 09:43 AM
Please don't do the recommendations. It confuses people trying to find multiple books within the same series.
  47. CeceliaJune 24, 2008 @ 05:42 PM
I want to be able to find lists of most popular books, or best genre lists, instead of just reccomendation lists.
  48. WendyJune 25, 2008 @ 06:10 PM
Is there an easy way to import my amazon.com Media Library collection (not my amazon.com wishlist) into my Facebook Visual Bookshelf? Thanks!!
  49. AriamJune 26, 2008 @ 11:08 AM
While I appreciate the "Manage" function that is available, there are still a few problems. One, as others have said, is the multiple similar versions of the same book. Another is that there is no standard naming scheme. Some titles are in all caps, others aren't. Some authors with abbreviated names have spaces in between, others don't - this causes, for example, "J. R. R. Tolkien" to show up separated from "J.R.R. Tolkien." Some books in a series list the series and number (even this is written in different ways), and others don't. Books with multiple authors usually just list the first one, but some list two. Basically, I'm wondering if the existing "Manage" interface could be given more of the capability of LibraryThing's. Even though their database keeps all information as it was originally entered, you can change how (for instance) the titles appear in your personal catalog. Or you can alphabetize by the author's last name. This would go a long way to addressing these issues. Thanks!
  50. CariJune 26, 2008 @ 09:51 PM
I agree with Cathy - I would love to see an export feature so I could download my list to an excel spreadsheet.
  51. Julia ScullyJune 27, 2008 @ 06:24 AM
I would LOVE to be able to perform a search to see which other users have the most number of read books in common with me. What could be a better way to get a solid reccommendation than someone that you know enjoys the same things you do? I would also like to see the list condensed down because there are a lot of doubles and triples of books. I love this application! Thanks for creating it!!
  52. Angela RyanJune 27, 2008 @ 01:24 PM
May I beg for proper alphabetical order of authors? I.e. by last name, not first. Also many books have author listed as 'unknown' on your site - which is unmanageable for proper classification. Thanks.
  53. rebeccaJune 29, 2008 @ 04:06 AM
I was wondering if there would be a way to make a different folder or something to separate all my childhood favorites from my adult reads. Thanks
  54. SarahJune 30, 2008 @ 08:43 PM
I have two things that I think would make this much better: 1) When I delete a book from my list of books in my account, the deleted book still shows up on my "highly rated" list. However, I would think that once I had removed it from my list, it would no longer show up in the links on my profile. 2) It would be nice to be able to sort what books do show up on my profile page. I like that I can choose how many rows of books appear there, but also being able to select which books show up first, second, etc. would be nice (i.e. sort them by author, title, or even just place individual books one-by-one in the order you want them to be seen would be nice). Otherwise, I have to try and add a whole series at the same time so they show up somewhat together on my profile page, and even then sometimes they are not in the order in which I added them.
  55. RhianJuly 01, 2008 @ 04:56 PM
I like th new management page but would it be possible to extend the filter options to filter by the various other book details for example i would like to check if i've rated all the books i've read so to get just the books i want to check would need to filter the list by Reading Status = already read and Rating = unrated. Currently you can only filter by the book title and sort by the other column so you can't even get close if you have a big list of books.
  56. LeahJuly 01, 2008 @ 08:48 PM
Since I currently have iRead, I was hoping to be able to simply transfer all those books over to this application. I have over 700 books, so doing them one at a time it going to be time consuming. Any way to "import" those? Any chance of that happening in the future? :D Thanks! L
  57. TaraJuly 02, 2008 @ 02:10 AM
I have to agree with the streamlining requests. Being asked over and over again if I'd like to read "To Kill A Mockingbird" by every publisher know to man is incredibly irritating! I'd rather have books I haven't already responded to being suggested.
  58. ColleenJuly 07, 2008 @ 11:01 AM
How can I link my amazon affiliate link to my bookshelf on my facebook page? Thanks
  59. DeniseJuly 07, 2008 @ 03:50 PM
Is it possible to add a link to other booksharing sites such as Shelfari so that it is easier to add books that way? I have over 100 books listed on there that I have read and it'll take so much time adding the one by one on this site. Thanks
  60. DianeJuly 07, 2008 @ 07:01 PM
Is it possible in the MANAGEMENT Feature we could drag and move the books to put them in the order by series..?? That way if someone else is interested they will know which other books are in that series. I also have all these books that Friends have added and some I don't care to have on my web site. But it seems i can only delete from my own books I have listed. Is there I way I can delete off my site the books people post on MY site? Thanks. I love the visual bookshelf. I know you are working on different things, So thanks for listening to what we say.
  61. PeterJuly 07, 2008 @ 09:37 PM
Hey, just new and love it. Would love to be able to just add as owned a whole list of ISBN's - not a search - but a instant ADD TO SHELF because I already know the numbers are correct.
  62. JimJuly 08, 2008 @ 09:19 AM
Been a user for about a month, but I have to echo some of the comments on here. Would love to see a drag and drop or reorder function so that I can put the books I've read into an order I want, either by series or by order read.
  63. DarleanJuly 08, 2008 @ 04:59 PM
I'd like a way to be able to print out my "want to read list" that way I can take it with me to the library when I'm looking for new books to read.
  64. ZoeJuly 09, 2008 @ 03:57 AM
I second the need for a way to group books or even to tag them. That way I could have different shelves for different types of books. Don't want to mix my Carnegie/Newbery books with my Psychology or Sociology Reading. Thanks much!
  65. R DJuly 10, 2008 @ 07:21 AM
Can we have categories such as: Incomplete- sometimes I start reading a book and for a number of reasons abandaon it- e.g. time pressures or just the nature of the material and then return to reading it at a later time Undecided- there are titles one sees or reads reviews of and then can't make up their mind on reading it. I don't know why anyone would put time and effort in organising books in the Not Interested.
  66. MollyJuly 10, 2008 @ 09:19 AM
Just as some people already said... it would be great to have a category of Incomplete or Never Finished for books, because sometimes a book is so bad or you never had time to finish it, but you're not CURRENTLY reading it. Thanks! Love the app
  67. HenryJuly 10, 2008 @ 09:24 PM
The "Import from Amazon Wishlist" option only imports a user’s main wishlist, but Amazon users can have multiple wishlists. Is it possible to import them too?
  68. Amanda MilliganJuly 10, 2008 @ 09:41 PM
I love Visual Bookshelf, it is the most useful Facebook application for me. I think it would be great if you could tag "when" you read a book. The Month + Year would be sufficient. Would this be possible? Also: when on the "Manage" tab and you click "Author" to arrange your books, I would find it much more useful for the alphabetical order to be by Surname, not first name.
  69. ReneeJuly 12, 2008 @ 12:05 AM
Hi! I would really like a 'Tried to read' tag along with 'Already read', 'Currently reading', and 'Want to read'. There are a lot of books that I have started reading and put down - I don't feel comfortable saying that I read it, but an attempt was made! I would like to know books that friends tried to read and couldn't get through. Thanks!
  70. Mariana NewhardJuly 13, 2008 @ 09:09 AM
I am really frustrated with managing settings. Changes I'm making are not showing up in the Profile. The "Books I've already read" bar is not showing at all for starters.
  71. NancyJuly 13, 2008 @ 11:47 AM
Drag and drop would be great for organizing. Still having trouble deleting doubles.
  72. LorrieJuly 13, 2008 @ 02:21 PM
Multiple editions could be handled more easily if we had a way to designate in our profile that we do/don't want specific types of materials coming back in searches and recommendations. E.g., no books from Amazon.com.uk or no electronic books or ONLY hardback. This could also be handled by some sort of advanced search where we could toggle or untoggle specific types of editions.
  73. DavidJuly 14, 2008 @ 02:16 PM
I'd really like to be able to control the order of the books on my shelf. Thanks!
  74. Don BurkeJuly 15, 2008 @ 01:48 PM
I would suggest adding another option to the "Read It" options. As a pastor, I have a number of books and even sets that don't exactly fit into any of the options in this category. Strictly speaking, I've not finished reading them, nor are they actually on my "want to read" or 'currently reading' list. I would call these "Reference Books," but I don't know if that is a good description for the general population or not. I can live with it as it is, even if I do feel like I'm not being accurate when I mark that I've read the whole 30-volume set when I've only read a few articles from it. Just a thought.
  75. Don BurkeJuly 15, 2008 @ 01:50 PM
Also..., a link between various versions (e.g., different ISBN) of the same titles would be nice. Thanks.
  76. RosaJuly 15, 2008 @ 02:39 PM
I was wondering if there was a way to keep books from being repeated. Some of the books I've read have 10 different copies. It's inaccurate for me to have the same book on my list 15 times, but really it should only count for one book. Is there a way to merge all the books under one title?
  77. SarahJuly 16, 2008 @ 10:19 AM
This is pretty superficial, but I think it would be nice to sort and choose which "Friends" show up on your profile. Hopefully if you add the functionality to sort books you could do the same with friends. Thanks for taking into account everyone's feedback, that's what makes this application my favorite.
  78. MichaelJuly 16, 2008 @ 10:23 AM
I don't know if you can do this already, but is there a way to filter ONLY for books that you own? (Not books that you own AND want to read or have read)...for some reason, if you don't list your interest in the book that you own, then you can't see a list of owned books. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
  79. Marie TheronJuly 16, 2008 @ 01:26 PM
I have listed books in Word for years. Facebook is a much more fun way to keep records. It would be lovely to arrange the books according to what I want to display on my first page. I have put my best books down first and now they are 60 pages down the list. Secondly, I am sure there are people with the same taste in books and would love to follow their lists. The third request is that Kalahari.net or Loot.co.za upload their Afrikaans covers. A lot of very good literature appear on Facebook with faceless covers.
  80. angieJuly 17, 2008 @ 04:19 PM
I really would like to be able to export my list. I spent a lot of time on in and now I cant do anything else with it but look at it while Im on facebook. I see other people have suggested the same thing... so get on it! I dont want to have to stop using this app and then enter all my books in someone elses program! Thanks!
  81. RhondaJuly 18, 2008 @ 11:58 AM
Do you think there is a way you can show us people who have read the same books as we have? Like say, this user has read six of your books. Or you are 60% compatible with this user (based on similar literature tastes). I think this would make it easier to find persons to follow who read the same things that you do.
  82. Frank H. NunezJuly 20, 2008 @ 02:23 AM
There is another similar application in facebook, i read, that I filled with too many of the books I have read. It would be great to have tool to move them instead of having to find them and place them again in the visual shelf.
  83. Laura HigginbothamJuly 20, 2008 @ 07:38 PM
I agree with others above. I would like to see an "owned" and "library book" category. I donated hundreds of my hardbacks and paperbacks to a new patient library our hospital opened, while I've had the books I no longer do. Now that I've retired and have more time to browse, I utilize the library.
  84. PennyJuly 22, 2008 @ 09:07 AM
Hi Tim It's a great feature. Is there anyway you can do an export to Excel function so multiple sorting of data can be done? Thanks
  85. NancyJuly 22, 2008 @ 05:20 PM
I read travel memoirs, domestic public policy, pop science, animals / pets, culture, spirituality, chick lit... I'd love to be able to organize my books in sub-folders, by interest.
  86. Amy HamiltonJuly 22, 2008 @ 05:21 PM
Hi! Is there a way to personalize the titles of book shelves? For example, I'd like to feature a shelf with Books Written by My Friends. Thanks!
  87. BeckyJuly 28, 2008 @ 11:47 AM
Hi there. Love this site. Just one thing I have noticed, in 'Recommendations' I am noticing books I have already read, but have a different cover, and recommendations for authors I dislike. Anyway of resolving this? Thanks and best wishes.
  88. WhitneyJuly 28, 2008 @ 09:28 PM
I would love to see a "re-reading" option. It may seem unnecessary, but re-reading is a distinction that I think is important. Only certain books are worth re-reading, and re-reading certain books says something about what you're thinking about lately. I figured it's an easy enough option to add, that I'd mention it. Under the category of really not easy to add features... will you ever consider adding a link to find a book at a local library? Most library systems have easily navigated digital inventories now, and it would be a really nice alternative to the amazon link. Love your app! Keep it up!
  89. adamJuly 31, 2008 @ 01:56 PM
i would like to be able to categorize my games by system, ie xbox, xbox360 play station etc... gamingsocial needs that feature.

Tyler – May 30, 2008 @ 11:11 AM wrote: I would also like to see the option of "perused" or "partially read"... However, "perused" means to examine or consider with attention and in detail...to read thoroughly. Perhaps "skim" would be a better term. I'd like the option, too. There are a couple of books that I started and just know that I'm not going to finish them.

I agree with what Laila Ann – May 28, 2008 wrote about condensing all the listings of the same title into one listing. I realize that people might recognize whether they read the book by seeing the cover, and different editions have different covers, but maybe all the different covers could be grouped together in one listing?
  92. abbiAugust 03, 2008 @ 05:57 PM
i would like to have a way to make seperate categories you could books in. especially for series, or an author you read a lot of books from. examples would be being able to put all the harry potter books in a section, and all the books by tamora pierce in another. or scott westerfeld. they've both written a lot that i've read. =] also the excel thing is an excellent idea. and there shouldn't be multiple books if you know what i mean? like with different covers and stuff. its confusing.
  93. mattieAugust 03, 2008 @ 10:21 PM
Definitely agree with the folks that are having trouble with the recommendation and search returning multiple editions of the same book. As my bookshelf gets larger, this is getting more and more cumbersome.
  94. MeganAugust 04, 2008 @ 07:35 PM
The manage feature is great! Thanks! I do have one suggestion - it would be great if when you visit the page of a certain book, any reviews left by your friends on Visual Bookshelf would appear at the top of the review wall (kind of like the "you said" box). As much as I value the feedback of other users, I'd love to be able to easily see what my friends think.
  95. MelissaAugust 04, 2008 @ 08:41 PM
It would be great if you could choose how to order your books and then it stays that way until you choose to change it. I like my books alphabetized by author, but when I do that under 'Manage' they always resort back to the order in which they were added as soon as I leave that tab. Also being able to group books that are part of a collection and in a particular order would be great. I have a huge chunk of the 'Dune' series and it would be great to be able to group them in order from first to last.
  96. AllisonAugust 05, 2008 @ 07:26 PM
I love this application a lot as I'm a huge bibliophile. However, I'd really like to be able to arrange the books on my shelf so that my favorite books are showing.
  97. BrettAugust 05, 2008 @ 09:02 PM
Perhaps allowing the ability to check off multiple selections that need to be deleted instead of one at a time. Also, the recommendation list sometimes includes books that you have already read and placed on your list but are another edition. Once the book has been added, it should eliminate other editions of the same title from being on the recommendation list.
  98. JamieAugust 07, 2008 @ 10:26 AM
I'd love to rearrange the ordering of books (especially if I could choose what was featured on my main page)
  99. CynthiaAugust 07, 2008 @ 11:25 AM
Is there a way to prevent the hardcover and paperback copies of the same book from popping up? I suppose it's possible to have read both, but how often is there a difference?
  100. RebekahAugust 09, 2008 @ 05:09 AM
Just adding my vote to the option of being able to rearrange what appears on my main page - I'm going down my physical bookshelf, adding the books I own, and they are of course appearing in the order I'm adding them, so as I type this, I have two series taking up all the spaces while a book I'd like to feature is buried down at the bottom of the list because I happened to add it as one of my first titles.
  101. JimAugust 13, 2008 @ 02:27 AM
It would be a great feature if you could add when you actually read the book. You could enter exact begin and end dates for each book (if you remember them - I have been keeping track of start and end dates of books I read on index cards I use as book marks. If it's an audio book, I can put the start and end date into the comments section of the ID3 tag). Or you could put some thing as general as a month and year or just year. This way you could sort your shelf by the order in which you read the books. This would be an incredibly useful feature fr me. Thanks!
  102. Sue TriggAugust 13, 2008 @ 02:27 AM
Ditto all that has been said but wanted to add my personal thanks.....best app. on FB !!
  103. KateAugust 13, 2008 @ 02:33 PM
The improvements are fantastic...Thanks :) I was also wandering if it would be possible to add a option of rearranging the books into different categories, like Author, Fiction, Non-Fiction, etc. or just being able to drag and move the books we've added into the order we want them would be great.
  104. Tom WarnerAugust 13, 2008 @ 05:33 PM
Amen: # Amanda – May 19, 2008 @ 11:59 PM I would really appreciate a way to group books on different shelves by subject, author, or genre. The way the list is now, it can be huge to scan through.
  105. KendraAugust 15, 2008 @ 02:48 AM
I agree with the majority. Being able to choose which books I show on my profile would be amazing. Idea: You could check a box next to the books you want displayed. Props on the amazing application.
  106. KimberlyAugust 15, 2008 @ 04:34 AM
I would like to have the ability to create groups of books. For example, I would like to create something like Amazon's Listmania lists so that if someone is interested in books about a certain topic, I can give them a list of books I think are helpful on the topic.
  107. SamanthaAugust 18, 2008 @ 06:56 AM
Yes, the order is a bit anoying. I wish they would at least pop up randomly instead of however I added them last... Also, a sort function that puts the author and then title in alphabetical order would be amazing... rite now its hard to tell if Ive got two different versions of the same book up for certain authors...
  108. ElaineAugust 18, 2008 @ 09:11 PM
I find this new organization a bit hard to deal with, b/c I recognize covers before I recognize names or authors...so I hate that the images are gone. I'm sure I'll get used to it though. It would be nice if you could organize by more than one category...so that, for example, when you look at your "want to read" books you could organize them by author or title instead of it being a random mixed up "want to read" list. It would also be really amazing if some sort of print capability could be added, to create a "want to read" list of the books you don't own so you can take it to a bookstore.
  109. JamesAugust 19, 2008 @ 10:47 AM
I agree that an option to export the data would be fantastic. A CSV file would be ideal. But you folks have done a great job with this application and I really love it. It's my favorite facebook application. Thanks so much for the hard work you put into it.
  110. SbegumAugust 20, 2008 @ 12:24 PM
How about how to dis invite someone from your visual bookshelf? Really need to be able to do this especially if you added someone on by mistake.
  111. dan greenAugust 21, 2008 @ 09:11 AM
when i started my profile, i did so by browsing the books in the database, got tired, figured i'd go back and finish later. unfortunately, it doesn't seem that there is anyway to go back to browsing the entire database without entering a search term.

Hello, this some features you may be try (scuse my english ): 1) It would be glad if we could store books by category like music, biography, poetry... like that people could see what you've read in your music category or autobiography poetry !! 2) can we decide the book visible on the facebook application? It would be a mini bookshelf for facebook made by ourself ! Because there's some book i want to appear first on my facebook ! Thanks for reading me and keep going your website and ideas are great ! peace JD
  113. Jen B.August 22, 2008 @ 10:07 AM
It would be great if we could import our book collections from sites like www.goodreads.com or www.librarything.com.
  114. J RyanAugust 23, 2008 @ 02:50 AM
Drag and drop would be nice... And it would be very nice to have "Owned It" or something similar as a category - especially for GAMING social, as I sell many of my games after playing them and I know others frequently do the same. Actually, Gaming Social doesn't even have an "I Own It" as a category - why is that??? And why is there a "Not Interested" category - if I wasn't interested in it, why would I bother putting it up on my page? Kind of confusing. But, I do really like the applications overall, so thanks for those!
  115. jessAugust 24, 2008 @ 10:25 PM
How about a 'lost and found' section in the bookshelf? So often you lend a book and then cannot remember to whom or when you lent it . And it is always the books you really liked, recommended and insisted your friend borrow, that are never returned. The bermuda triangle for books borrowed and not returned! So the category could be ....up to you to work out what might remind people.
  116. rajiusAugust 24, 2008 @ 11:23 PM
Hi, I can never cancel the book I've been reading. The button is not working. Can anybody tell me why?
  117. MaryAugust 28, 2008 @ 11:19 AM
I think it would be cool if you enter a book you are reading and a box shows which of your friends have read/are reading it too.
  118. pipsaAugust 29, 2008 @ 06:42 PM
Hello and greetings from Finland! At first I would like to say that I really like your visual bookshelf application. I would like to propose an idea about developing the application. Me and my friends read lot of Finnish books and also books that are translated into finnish and I would love to add information about the books that do I own finnish copy or have I read the translated version or the original one. That would make good improvement to the visual bookshelf and I sure you have lots of other users that read books in their own languages. In review section I would find it really helpful if I could see is this the translation or the original one that the user is reviewing because reading the translated version is never the same. Keep up the good work!

Hi Tim I have the same question as Daniana, could we move the books to put them in the order we've read them? That would make this more interesting. Thanks for this amazing application.
  121. P NelsonSeptember 03, 2008 @ 05:10 AM
Hi Tim, whilst I am able to sync from Facebook into readingsocial account, I can't seem to sync back from the main application to facebook i.e. books I add through the main site do not get reflected back into my facebook account. Can you please check? Thanks!
